Muay Thai (Thai Kickboxing)
This ancient, cultural martial art originally from Thailand is a form of close combat that uses the entire body as a weapon mimicking the tools of war. Every part of the body takes on a function such as hands – dagger or sword; elbow – hammer; legs and knees – axe and staff; conditioned shins and forearms – armour against blows. This traditional combat sport is referred to as the ‘Art of the Eight Limbs’ due to the fact that the hands, shins, elbows and knees are extensively used. Strikes can be executed using eight points of contact as opposed to two points, namely the fists in Western boxing and four points or fist and feet used in the sport oriented martial art forms.
While professional Mauy Thai fighters across the globe train for several hours a day, we at Quest Fitness start our clients with the basics and move on to more advanced moves only when basic skills have been mastered. Our drills include kicks and punches using gloves similar to those used in Western boxing. The workout targets arms, shoulders, abs, thighs and legs and is known to burn an average of 500 calories in an hour.
